Many of these ships are still resting in the same position they did when they sank centuries before. Flag Minnesota's Historic Shipwrecks are not limited to shipwrecks or to Lake Superior. They include the remains of ancient Indian camps that were built on now-inundated shorelines of Lake Superior and the interior lakes. Water levels have fluctuated greatly due to climatic changes, geological processes, and human interference. More recent features such as docking structures, navigation aids, and other port facilities are also present beneath the water. All of these resources can potentially tell us something about the past and add excitement to diving excursions.


Flag Monitor was the prototype for a class of U.S. Civil War ironclad turreted warships that significantly altered both naval technology and marine architecture in the nineteenth century.Sunk during a gale in December 1862, less than a year after her commissioning, the wreck lies upside down and has suffered considerable deterioration and structural damage. The wreck lies near the northernmost limit of tropical fish, and supports a combination of temperate and tropical species, dominated by red barbier in one survey. Twenty-five species of fish have been observed, as well as a wide variety of encrusting organisms such as corals, sponges, sea squirts, sea anemones, hydroids, barnacles, mussels, and oysters.


Flag Northern Shipwreck Database : Northern Maritime Research has been compiling a database of North American marine casualties between the 40 degree north latitude and the North Pole. The result (Aug. 1996) is more than 53,300 records of marine casualties encompassing the North Atlantic, the Great Lakes, Interior waterways, the Pacific Northwest to the Arctic. Their www (FAQ) site provides details on requesting information on specific wrecks, or acquiring a copy of the 1997 version on CD-ROM.


Flag SinkF69 is a New Zealand website about the upcoming purposeful sinking of the retired naval frigate HMNZS Wellington. One of the last of the steam powered Leander Class procket frigates, the Wellington will make an ideal structure for life as an artificial reef off the south coast of Wellington City.


Flag Submerged Cultural Resources Unit was formed in 1980 by the National Parks Service to formalize its efforts to investigate shipwrecks, documenting their locations and conditions. The unit is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is staffed by professional underwater archaeologists, technicians and other professionals to provide the United States national park system with the necessary expertise to fulfill its major roles. It was compiled by the the late James Jetzer, a well known diver and marine historian from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Jetzer was involved in locating a number of Lake Michigan wrecks and compiled extensive files.

These wrecks provide safe yet challenging choices for divers of all levels and experience. Dive in crystal-clear waters. The excellent underwater visibility of Lake Superior during the diving season is 30 to 50 feet at a depth of 100 feet.


Flag Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association is a volunteer group assisting the State Underwater Arch. program with fieldwork and research. The association offers regular training classes, publishes research and a quarterly newsletter.
