Irish Underwater Council (CFT) was formed in 1963 as the governing body for scuba diving and snorkelling clubs in Ireland, of which there were 6 at the time. It is administered by an executive committee drawn from the 80 or so clubs now affiliated to it, and has a current membership well in excess of three thousand active divers. Omagh Sub-Aqua Club was formed in 1979, and is affiliated with The Irish Underwater Council. The Club's most popular dive site is Mullaghmore on the North-West coast of County Sligo. This area has very sheltered sites where inexperienced divers can safely undergo tuition in open water. There are also more adventurous sites for the more experienced divers which can be accessed by boat, such as Ballyconnell, Inishmurray Island and Saint John's Point.
